Always On My Mind

SOUTHEND CITY JAM - UK | Painted at one of Europe's largest street art festivals — this piece is part of an ongoing series exploring the power of visualisation. It reflects the idea that our thoughts and dreams shape the future we step into. If you can see it clearly in your mind, you can move toward it. Hold the image. Nurture it. Never let it go.

I Am You

This mural grew from a chain of local creativity: a poet captured the spirit of the town in words, a musician turned those words into a song, and a young filmmaker gave it a visual form. I was invited to complete the circle—translating their voices into paint. The work reflects a community bound by shared roots: the pride of a coal mining past, the joy of carnival, faces painted for football or festivity. I Am You, You Are Me. We recognize each other—even if we’ve never met.

The Fledglings

This mural was shaped by local voices. A poem by a well-known Dutch comedian and poet set the tone, while personal stories from residents—forced to leave their lifelong homes in a soon-to-be-demolished apartment block—gave it weight. A tribute to small goodbyes and the quiet heartbreak of letting go. The Fledglings captures that moment of leaving the nest, not always by choice | PAINTED TOGETHER WITH MY DEAR FRIEND MARCUS - GOMAD - DEBIE

A Bit Of Both

In this vibrant mural, James paints two lively sparrows fluttering around a large tree - bringing color and life to a dull, three-floor high courtyard surrounded by brick, concrete, and steel. The work is intentionally bright and cheerful, inviting a mix of both nature and energy into a space where neither had been present before. A bit of both!

The Girl With The Violin

STREET ART FESTIVAL - WILHELMSHAVEN - GERMANY | I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of time - how it shapes our experience, our emotions, and especially our sense of rhythm. Without time, there would be no movement, no music.
In this mural, I wanted to capture that idea visually: the energy and flow within the act of playing an instrument. The girl and her violin are at the heart of a spiraling composition, where every line and curve echoes the motion of music as it travels through time. A celebration of rhythm, joy, and the invisible force that carries it all forward.

Catch A Fish

In this mural, James depicts a kingfisher in mid-flight, moments after diving into a nearby creek to catch its prey. The work blends his expertise in realistic nature painting with the freedom of large-scale mural design, capturing the elegance and precision of this protected species. Fittingly, the wall lies close to the kingfisher’s actual habitat - surrounded by bushes and waterways - making the artwork feel both grounded and alive in its environment.

I Can See What You Think

OFF THE WALL - STREET ART FESTIVAL - PRAGUE | This work captures that trance-like moment—we’ve all been there. Eyes fixed on nothing, thoughts drifting, emotions blending into a quiet fog. You slip away for a second… until someone snaps you back with a “Hellooo?” and you jolt: “Huh, what?” But we saw it. We saw what you were thinking. Gotcha.

The Manifestation Of Dreams

NOISY WATERS MURAL FEST - BELLINGHAM USA | The 2nd work in a series exploring how our thoughts and dreams shape the reality ahead. We all carry vivid visions in our minds - but what happens after we imagine them? I pictured those dreams as waves of energy, drifting outward, unseen, until they eventually rain down into our future and take form. This mural captures that invisible process: where intention meets manifestation.

The Old Couple

Painted in a large communal space of an elderly care home, this mural features two birds - standing close, facing one another. They are The Old Couple. Perhaps they’re dancing. Perhaps they’re arguing. Or simply sharing a familiar silence. Their posture leaves the story open, much like the long histories shared by real-life couples. The background is filled with subtle, symbolic elements—fragments of thoughts, memories, and routines that often live quietly in the minds of older people. A tender, layered homage to the beauty, complexity, and quiet humour of growing old together.

Ice Queen

Created for the renowned Dutch Ice Sculpture Festival, Ice Queen is a fully collaborative mural by James and fellow artist Marcus ‘GOMAD’ Debie. The design and execution are a seamless fusion of both their styles. Commissioned by their long-time creative partner, the Kings of Colors Foundation, the mural was part of a special exhibition featuring nearly 20 artists from the Netherlands and Belgium - each contributing a unique piece for the occasion.

Birth / Rebirth

In this mural, James portrays a newborn child floating amidst symbolic elements of life, all gently circling around it. The work reflects on the cycle of existence—touching on themes of birth, rebirth, and perhaps even reincarnation. At its core, it poses one of the oldest human questions: Where do we come from? Where do we go? Fittingly, the mural was commissioned for a midwife’s practice, adding an extra layer of meaning to the work’s message and setting.

Welcome Colourful Friends

This mural gives expression to the colourful unity of the people in this neighbourhood. It's a happy multi-culti environment in which the inhabitants like to put out this welcome to anyone who comes to visit or stay. It used to be a terrible neighbourhood in the past, with all kind of social problems and poverty related crime. That has changed drastically in the recent years and adding public art is just another great way to raise the collective consciousness of this hood.

Back To The Future

Not that “Back to the Future” - no Doc Brown involved. In this mural, James responds to the remarkable true story of a little-known local artist who rebranded himself as a visionary architect and persuaded the city board to build his extravagant, castle-like central station. A futuristic concept that cost millions… and somehow worked out brilliantly. The mural captures both the audacity and the unexpected success of dreaming big.

Turfboy

Set in a region known for its peat-cutting history, this mural shows a boy dressed in 1930s fashion—a nod to the area’s working-class roots. Yet in his hand is a smartphone, anchoring him firmly in the present. Designed and painted together with my friend and colleague Gart Smits, the work bridges past and present in a single image, capturing how history and modern life often coexist in unexpected ways.

Green Over Gold

This piece blends nature and symbolism into a single narrative. Green Over Gold hints at nature reclaiming what humans built - or at a shift in mindset: from chasing gold to choosing green. At the center is a triangle, open to interpretation. It could echo the melting pyramid of a collapsing power structure, slowly overtaken by plants and decay. Or it might reflect the human psyche: the thinking mind (a monkey), the emotional self (a koala), and our biological roots (a large leaf). These forces coexist - rarely in balance. In this moment, the monkey sits at the base… but the triangle may yet turn.

Choose Your Weapon

This wall is one part of a full building wrap at De Bossche School, an educational complex dedicated to craft and skill. The project was a team effort, organized by Kings of Colors with designs by Marcus ‘Gomad’ Debie, pained by Gomad, Gart Smits, and myself—with groundwork by Vincent Huibers and his apprentice crew. My wall focuses on the moment when students choose their ‘weapon’: the tool that will shape their craft, education, and future. A symbolic turning point—where direction begins with a single choice.

The Oss Connection

This mural is the largest in the Netherlands, covering over 2,000 square meters on a massive cooling facility owned by Vice Versa in the town of Oss. Designed by James’s colleague Marcus ‘GOMAD’ Debie, the artwork symbolically represents what unites the people of Oss. The central figures - buffalo-like cattle known as Os in Dutch - create a direct and playful link to the town’s name. The project was a true team effort, executed by a group of eight muralists, including James, GOMAD, Karski & Beyond (NL), Mattez (DE), and others.

The Cherry Walls : Cherrish Life

Painted in a corridor of Maastricht’s Hospital’s cancer treatment department (Maastro), Cherrish Life was designed to bring a moment of warmth and lightness to patients on their way to treatment. With ripe, vibrant cherries as the central motif, the mural encourages a quiet celebration of vitality - even in difficult times. Its color palette was carefully matched to the surrounding interior, where the architect also embraced the cherry theme. A visual reminder to pause, take in beauty, and hold on to life’s sweetness - however small.

The Cherry Walls : A Taste Of Life

Located in the cancer treatment wing of the Venlo hospital (Maastro), A Taste of Life continues the theme of health and resilience. Juicy, fresh cherries burst with color and energy, offering patients a subtle nudge toward hope and appetite - for life, for healing, for more. The mural stands as a soft, inviting contrast to the clinical environment, and echoes its sister piece, Cherrish Life, in both theme and intention: to uplift, comfort, and connect through something as simple and joyful as fruit.

The Pharmacy Walls : Foxglove

Known for its toxicity when untreated - and its life-saving potential when properly dosed - foxglove is the subject of this striking mural. The plant is shown in full bloom, surrounded by lush leaves and glistening water droplets, all painted with near photographic precision. Through this work, James reflects the delicate balance between danger and cure - a theme fitting for the pharmacy environment in which it lives.

The Pharmacy Walls : Poppy

This mural shows the striking red poppy, painted in various stages - from full bloom to seed pod - hinting at its dual identity as both a natural beauty and a potent medical source. Historically used for extracting the base of opiates, the plant is depicted here with exacting realism. James’s technique pushes the limits of spray paint, turning a pharmacy wall into a vivid meditation on the power and complexity of plant-based medicine.

The Pharmacy Walls : Chamomile

In this mural, James zooms in on a close-up of blooming chamomile flowers, capturing their soft white petals and golden centers in extreme photorealistic detail. A hoverfly rests on one bloom, adding a touch of motion and life to the stillness. Entirely painted by hand with spray cans, the work honors the enduring place of chamomile in healing traditions - both past and present.

The Pharmacy Walls : Ginkgo Biloba

Inside this pharmacy, James painted a hyperrealistic depiction of the ancient Ginkgo Biloba tree, its fan-shaped leaves rendered in delicate detail. Woven through the branches is a snake - a historic symbol of medicine - tying the visual narrative to the pharmaceutical world. Executed entirely by hand with spray paint, the mural bridges traditional herbal knowledge with modern medical science, celebrating the lasting relevance of nature’s remedies.

When Only the Hand Was Left

In this mural, James uses nature as metaphor to tell a quiet, powerful story. A small tit bird perches on an open hand, pecking at the grains offered to it. Painted inside a care home for people living with dementia, the scene reflects the deep dependence and vulnerability found within these walls. Like the bird, the residents rely entirely on the care and kindness extended to them - when memory fades, and independence is lost, the hand that remains becomes their final connection to the world. A gentle tribute to fragility, dignity, and the quiet strength of care.

Come Fly With Me

This mural welcomes residents and visitors at the base of a 12-story apartment block for elderly tenants. Painted in photorealistic detail, this lovely bird is bringing warmth and softness into an otherwise stark, concrete space. While there’s no deeper story behind the composition, its purpose is clear: to bring a touch of nature, color, and stillness into daily life. A simple gesture, meant to offer comfort and presence in a place where peace matters most.

The Canadian Corner : Front Wall

On the front façade of The Canadian Corner, James painted a panoramic mountain scene featuring a grey squirrel and a towering grizzly bear. Graphic overlays blend into the composition, incorporating the red and white of the Canadian flag and its iconic maple leaf. Centered around the main entrance, the mural fuses national identity with raw wilderness in James’s signature style.

The Canadian Corner : Side Wall

Wrapping around the corner, the mural continues with forested mountains and a hyperrealistic moose staring directly outward. Subtle graphic layers echo those on the front, tying the two walls together visually. With minimal architectural interruption, this side wall becomes a bold tribute to the scale and quiet power of Canada’s natural landscape.

The Sevagram Walls – Bloom & Flutter

In this photorealistic mural, James brings a vivid burst of nature into the heart of Sevagram’s office environment. Bright orange flowers bloom against a soft green-olive background, while an orange-toned butterfly hovers gently above - creating a moment of calm and natural beauty in an otherwise artificial workspace. Subtle graphic overlays add a modern, layered touch, typical of James’s visual language.

The Sevagram Walls – Fern & Droplets

This second mural at the same Sevagram location focuses on the delicate structure of ferns, painted in rich green and earthy brown tones. Each leaf is rendered in hyperrealistic detail, with glistening water droplets catching the light. Set against a deep, dark background, the composition gives the illusion of real foliage emerging from the wall - bringing stillness and depth to the office setting.

The Sevagram Walls : The Presence of Stillness

This mural stretches across a hallway wall in a soft, panoramic band. Within it, pale branches, grasses, and leaves appear to drift through a light grey mist - completely desaturated, almost weightless, evoking a sense of quiet calm. In contrast, a twisted branch breaks through the haze in photorealistic detail, painted with sharp depth and clarity. A single red ladybug rests on it - symbol of peace and non-violence - offering a small yet powerful reminder of life and presence. In this serene care environment, the mural creates a space where stillness feels alive.

The Sevagram Walls : The Weight Of Lightness

Just a few steps further along the same hallway, this companion piece shifts the atmosphere. A vibrant yellow-orange band runs across the wall, warm and softly glowing. From it, a lifelike branch emerges, painted in full contrast and clarity - another ladybug, this time yellow with black spots, quietly resting on its surface. Around it, the composition gently dissolves: branches and leaves fade into fluttering line drawings, drifting above and below the main form like thoughts in motion. Between form and suggestion, weight and air, the mural brings a peaceful energy into this place of care and recovery.

Building Wrap : The Car Wash

This building wrap features a full transformation of a carwash complex in Roermond - NL. The murals cover the entire outside of the object, giving it its very unique and recognisable new look. The project was executed by James in collaboration with Arian Winterink.

Building Wrap : Dacada Studio

For the well-known German adult content studio Dacada, the majority of their building façades have been given a fresh visual identity. The murals subtly reference the nature of the company’s work - hinting at it without crossing into controversy. The project was executed by James in collaboration with Gart Smits and Arian Winterink.

Skate Park : A Bit Of Culture

Skate parks usually have a natural tendency to end up completely in graffiti tags and pieces. This one got a complete make over. This part shares a look at the sports and culture of several clubs that are having their homes in the facility close by this skatepark. Commission by the municipal.

Skate Park : Get Your Boards Out

Skate parks usually have a natural tendency to end up completely in graffiti tags and pieces. This one got a complete make over. This part of the project has been painted to inspire the (mostly) youth who hang around this block to participate in skating or skate boarding. Commission by the municipal.

The Midwife Practice

For the reception room of a midwifery practice, James created this mural as an expression of the unborn child - visible within the mother’s belly, lovingly embraced by her arms. Just like this image, the care provided by the midwives gently embraces the entire journey of pregnancy with warmth and compassion.

Little Tuscany

Though this picturesque Italian village doesn't exist in reality, James created it by studying dozens of reference images and combining typical elements into a new, imagined scene. Painted on a private kitchen wall, the mural captures the warmth, charm, and atmosphere of Italy - without being tied to a specific place. A handmade composition, crafted with precision and feeling - like AI might do today, but this was before AI was available to do such tasks. Pure craftsmanship!

Play With Fire

Painted on the angled attic wall of a private music room, this mural features a bold close-up of a guitar bursting into stylized flames along its lower edge. The space belongs to a passionate guitarist who retreats here to play and unwind. Commissioned as a surprise gift from his wife, the mural is a tribute to his love for music - where fire meets strings, and passion finds its echo in paint.

Enjoy The Silence

This mural stretches across the entire width of an open kitchen-living room, offering a sun-drenched view into an imagined Mediterranean desertscape - reminiscent of central Spain. Unlike most murals, James painted this one entirely from memory and imagination - without a single reference image on site. A nice touch: the cluster of painted cactuses in the foreground blends seamlessly with the real cactuses placed in front of the wall, blurring the line between art and reality.

We, Layers In Time

Painted in a room of a local Bed & Breakfast, this mural is part of a series where regional artists each contribute a work tied to their heritage. James’s contribution pays tribute to the region’s coal mining history - a past that, though closed, still resonates deeply with the local community. The mural features a coal miner as its central figure, rendered with emotional weight and respect. Accompanying the image is a Dutch-language poem, also written by James, sharing the mural’s title: We, Layers in Time - a reflection on history, identity, and what lies buried beneath the surface.

May The Force Be With You

For a devoted Star Wars fan, James created a custom mural combining iconic elements from the Star Wars universe. Rather than just copying existing imagery, he composed an entirely original scene - capturing the essence of Star Wars while ensuring the work remains unique and personal. The result is a one-of-a-kind tribute to a galaxy far, far away, crafted with respect for the saga and the fan behind the wall.

Lebron In Motion

For a true fan of the game, James created this dynamic portrait of basketball legend LeBron James. The composition - built using a mix of AI-generated imagery and manual Photoshop work - shows LeBron mid-action, caught in the focused moment just before releasing a signature three-pointer. Painted on a high-quality, custom-prepared wooden panel, the mural blends precision, motion, and admiration into one powerful tribute.

Food Market Vibes

As part of a larger team effort, James collaborated with Marcus ‘GOMAD’ Debie and Gart Smits to transform the interior of a vibrant Food Market. The mural designs were created by GOMAD, and the project was commissioned by their long-time creative partner, Kings of Colors. While the full space includes many painted sections, the piece shown here is entirely painted by James - showcasing his personal style within a shared visual language.

Office “Graffiti Vibes” | Wall Nr. 1

In the office of a director, located within a centuries-old building in the heart of Maastricht, James painted this bold graffiti piece directly opposite the main desk. The vibrant writing - executed in classic graffiti style - commands the space with unapologetic energy, creating a striking contrast with the building’s monumental character and formal function. Within this traditional setting, the mural acts as a visual jolt: raw street culture embedded in a heritage frame.

Late Night Bar “Graffiti Vibes”

In a Maastricht bar interior, James was commissioned to add several graffiti pieces to inject street-level energy into the otherwise conventional design. This particular work features a wildstyle interpretation of the word "drinks", bursting with dynamic lines and bold color contrasts. Set against the clean architecture of the venue, the piece brings an unfiltered urban edge to the space - merging nightlife with graffiti culture in one fluent visual statement.

Office “Graffiti Vibes” | Wall Nr. 2

Tucked beneath an old wooden staircase in the same historic Maastricht building, this graffiti mural explodes with color in an otherwise minimal hallway of white walls and natural timber. Painted on the underside and back of the staircase, the piece breaks every rule of symmetry and subtlety - deliberately so. It’s street art in its purest form, clashing beautifully with the building’s refined interior and offering a bold surprise for anyone passing through.

Office “Graffiti Vibes” | Wall Nr. 3

Positioned between two tall windows in a high-ceilinged office room, this vertical graffiti piece draws immediate attention upon entry. Painted on a narrow wall that visually divides the space, the mural stretches nearly to the ceiling - bold, colorful, and full of classic graffiti energy. Within the stately elegance of this historic building, it acts as a vertical exclamation mark: rebellious and vibrant, unapologetically disrupting the symmetry with raw expression.

The Climbing Corner – Terrace Graffiti

Commissioned by a climbing gym to transform their outdoor terrace, this graffiti piece is a vibrant explosion of fluid, three-dimensional forms. James was given full creative freedom in both design and execution, resulting in a wildstyle composition that may be unreadable to most - but captivates through depth, movement, and color. The work brings new energy to what was once a dull exterior space, turning the terrace into a bold visual landmark with unmistakable street character.

3D Graffiti “FISH”

Painted under his former alias FISH, this mural showcases James’s signature 3D graffiti style - rich in warm tones like yellow, ochre, and orange. The piece stands prominently in the city center of Heerlen, surrounded by a dense collection of street art and graffiti. Its bold depth and vibrant color palette make it unmistakably his, even under a different name. A personal piece from a brief but defining chapter in his graffiti journey.
